Making payments in Internet Banking

Paying a person or bill is simple with Bank of Scotland Internet Banking.

Everything is designed to help you move your money securely and with confidence.

1. Get started

To get started select ‘Payments & transfers’ on the account you want to move money from.

2. Choose where to send your money

From here you can move money to one of your own accounts.

Or if you’ve paid someone before, simply pick them from the list under ‘Your recipients’.

To pay someone new, select ‘Add new recipient’ and follow the on-screen instructions.

3. Check and send

It’s easy to check everything’s correct before confirming the payment.

When you see ‘Success’ you know your payment has been sent. You’re done!

1. Get started

Select the ‘Pay Credit Card’ button on the Credit Card account you want to make the payment to.

2. One-off or regular payments

Choose to make a one-off payment or set up a regular payment by Direct Debit.

3. How much

When making a one-off payment, choose to pay:

  • The full balance from your latest statement
  • A different amount that you choose
  • The minimum payment from your latest statement.

You can set up the payment to be made up to 31 days in the future.

4. Check and send

Check everything’s correct and then click or tap ‘confirm’ to send the payment.

Please keep in mind that if you're making a payment to your Bank of Scotland Credit Card online, the payment will not be reflected in your list of recent transactions until the next working day.

Direct Debits

Direct Debits need to be created by the company you are paying, but you can view them through our Internet Banking service. If you want to change or cancel any of your Direct Debits you will need to contact the billing company so they cancel it from their end too.

Standing orders

You can set up standing orders easily through Internet Banking or call us on 0345 721 3141 and set one up in minutes. Simply add the recipient details, the amount you want to pay, the frequency and date of the first payment. You will be able to view, add, change or delete any of your standing orders whenever you want. Standing orders are a good way to save regularly from your current account and are an easy way to grow your savings. They’re also a useful way to pay your credit card bills or for any other type of regular payment.

Payment limits and time frames

When making a payment choose whether to pay as soon as possible or on a future date.

If you choose as soon as possible, we'll check to see if the sort code you are sending your payment to is Faster Payment enabled, and if it is, the payment should be completed within 2 hours.

If the person or company you are paying isn't able to receive Faster Payments, you won't be able to make the payment online.

You can also use the sort code checker tool on the Payments UK website to find out if the account you are paying to is Faster Payments enabled.

Daily payment limits apply, which may be affected by other payments you have made on the same day or the time a payment request is made. For more information, including the payment hours, please see the list of Frequently Asked Questions.

Faster Payments Service

What are the daily payment limit restrictions?
When making payments to other parties from your Internet Banking account, your daily payment limit is £25,000.
Your payment limit amount can be a combination of the following:

  • Bill payments
  • Payments to individuals
  • New standing orders
  • Travel Money
  • The value of any increase in a standing order.

Payment limits are calculated at the time you request a payment and not when the payment actually leaves your account. For example, if you set up a standing order today which is to leave your account on the 2nd of each month, the amount is part of today’s £25,000 limit and not the limit for the 2nd when the payment leaves your account.

Payments over £25,000
If you want to make a payment greater than £25,000, you could:

  • Split the payment over two or more days (see payment hours below)

Bank Holiday payment limits

On bank holidays, the £25,000 payment limit will be combined with the following day’s limit. For example:

  • On a bank holiday Monday, the payment limit will be combined with Tuesday’s limit (12:00pm Sunday to 9:59pm Tuesday)
  • On Good Friday, the payment limit will be combined with Saturday’s limit (10:00pm Thursday to 11:59am Sunday).

Are all payments sent by Faster Payments Service?
All payments will be sent using Faster Payments Service and will leave the account immediately.  In most cases the cleared money will be available on the recipient's bank account within 2 hours, but it can sometimes take up to close of business the next working day.

The bank account that you are sending the money to will need to be able to accept Faster Payments. You can check if the sort code accepts Faster Payments by using the sort code checker tool on the Payments UK website.

What about regular payments I receive from other people, will they be faster?
Regular payments you receive from other people will be faster, provided the sending bank is part of the Faster Payments Service and can send Faster Payments.

How long does it take to transfer money between my accounts?
Transfers made between your own personal accounts will be made right away or you can choose a future date.

What if I have made a payment to the wrong account?
If you have made a payment to the wrong account details, or if you have made a payment using incorrect account information, please check if the payment has been returned to your account. If so, please resend the payment with the correct details. If the money hasn’t been returned and you know the beneficiary, the easiest and quickest way to recover the payment is to contact them directly. If however you don't know them or do not want to make direct contact, contact us directly on 0345 721 3141 and we will try and recover the funds for you.

Please be aware that if the account details for your recipient were incorrect when you set up the payment, we may not be able to help you and you will need to contact the bank you made the payment to.

The Payment Services Directive and the Payment Services Regulations 2009

What are the Payment Services Directive and the Payment Services Regulations 2009?
The Payment Services Directive is a European Union legislation which supports a Single European Payment Area (SEPA). This means that cross-border euro payments can be made as efficiently as within national borders. The legislation has been implemented in the UK by the Payment Services Regulations 2009.

What do the Payment Services Regulations 2009 mean to me?
The majority of payments you send from the 7th November 2011 will arrive by the next working day, where as previously, payments often took up to 4 days. Some payments will remain unaffected. These include those executed wholly in cash, cheques and other paper based transactions such as banker's drafts.

Who are SEPA member states?
The Payment Services Directive (PSD) covers all payment accounts within the Single European Payments Area (SEPA). SEPA consists of those countries who are members of the European Economic Area plus Monaco and Switzerland.
